CarrefourCARREFOUR has binned charging for plastic bags despite labelling the scheme “a complete success”.

While some stores will now charge one centimo per bag, others – mainly those close to competing supermarkets – will scrap the fee.

Last year, the French retail giant launched the scheme in an attempt to encourage shoppers to use reusable ‘bags for life’. Prices ranged from 50 cents to 1.70 euros, while shoppers were charged 10 cents for single-use biodegradable bags.

Many customers complained about the steep prices and claimed the biodegradable bags are more prone to breaking.

However, Carrefour insisted that 96 per cent of customers are now using reusable ‘bags for life’.
