AN estimated 300 flamingos have been struck dead by enormous hailstones in Albacete.

One of Spain’s most important bird reserves, Petrola Lake, was the victim of a freak hail storm.

While many inured birds had to be rescued, Albacete’s fire service said the number of dead flamingos was close to 300.

The service was called out by environmental officers at around 10:30am to aid the recovery operation.

They boarded two inflatable boats in order to reach the birds in the middle of the lake.
