SCIENTISTS in Barcelona have unveiled a new dietary supplement for combating tuberculosis.

Named Nyaditum resae, the supplement, which will be sold in India and Nepal in 2016, is capable of preventing the outbreak of the disease. That could save thousands of lives each year.

The scientists focussed their research on the fact that only 10% of those infected with tuberculosis actually develop the disease. They then explored how to reduce the inflammatory reaction to the bacteria that causes the outbreak.

The head of the study, Pere Joan Cardona, suggests that the treatment could reach a million people in its first three years, and only cost two euros for a 15-day treatment.
