A SEARCH for oil in the Alboran Sea has been scrapped.

Oil prospecting in the western part of the Mediterranean, bordering the Costa del Sol, is being pulled, according to the Spanish government.

Following an application from CNWL Oil Espana, the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism approved its decision to pull out of the Chinook A-D explorations off southern Spain.

The Alboran Sea project had already been rejected because of environmental risk, but this will be the official termination of a project that started in 2010.

This comes after Spanish energy giant Repsol scrapped its searches for oil and gas near the Canary Islands after deciding it was not worth drilling.
