ENVIRONMENTAL agencies are calling for an international crackdown on illegal fishing in the Mediterranean.
A massive 91% of the Med is now heavily overfished – most of which is illegal – according to the European Commission.
Illegal drift nets, longlines and dynamite fishing are the main concerns, identified by environmental organisation The Black Fish as a ‘non-stop problem’.
Overfishing leads to many of the ocean’s animals being killed in the process known as ‘by catch’, such as seabirds, turtles, whales and dolphins, that are accidentally drowned as a result of illegal fishing methods.
