A GROUND-BREAKING bluefin tuna farm is being opened in Murcia to ease pressure on the ocean’s reserves of the gourmet fish.

The regional government and the National Oceanography Institute have invested €6 million to kickstart the captive breeding programme.

Adult bluefin tuna, weighing up to 150 kilos each, will be kept in four large tanks near the Valdelentisco watercourse in Mazarron.

Their eggs will then be collected and taken to an existing farm for young tuna in Mazarron, a kilometre away from the tanks, to be hatched.
