RESIDENTS have just one week left to voice their opposition to plans for a controversial motorway linking Ronda with the Costa del Sol.

It comes as the IU party put in an official objection to the scheme that would see large parts of the Sierra Bermeja and Genal Valley carved up to make way for the toll motorway.

While the plans have been on public display throughout January, regional environment boss Miguel Esteban Martin, believes they have not had sufficient exposure.

He has insisted that each town hall affected must have plans on display for a month.

In spite of this, he highlighted a number of important objections that have already been raised by members of the public.

The project, which aims to cut the travel time from Ronda to the Costa del Sol by more than half, involves building a motorway covering the 32.8 kilometre distance from Ronda to the current A-7 motorway, by the Benahavis road.

The total investment is estimated to reach 350 million euros and the Ronda mayor, who is supporting the scheme, claims it could create more than 5,000 jobs.

But the project has come under fire from environmentalists who argue it will destroy the protected areas south of Ronda.

And others have questioned the necessity, and the impact the new motorway will have on the historical heritage of the town.
