RECENTLY on the verge of extinction, now red tuna could actually be making a comeback.

Scientists have confirmed that a plan, put in place in 2006 to recuperate numbers, is starting to reap success.

But they warn that strict limits must be maintained until at least 2013.

This follows years of campaigning to save the red tuna (also known as blue fin tuna).

Stocks plummeted from 300,000 tons in 1970 to just 100,000 in 2009.

While they have gone up a little over the last year, the EU will continue closely monitoring fishing vessels and keep the current catch quota of 13,500 tonnes a year.
