MORE than 1,500 people have been evacuated after a fire engulfed Huelva.

The forest fire, which began last night, has been placed on level one (maximum threat level) by the authorities.

Environment minister José Fiscal said the fire was likely to have been caused by arson.

Not only are people at risk, but it is feared it could spread to nearby Doñana national Park, home to several endangered species such as the Spanish imperial eagle.

Emergency services deployed 11 planes, 10 helicopters vehicles to battle the flames

Around 750 people are said to be taking refuge in sports centres, and some others have returned home.

Costa del Sol hotspots Marbella and Estepona have also been put on high alert due to risks of fire.

It comes after forest fires in Portugal, which shares its border with Huelva, claimed the lives of 64 last week.

Huelva has been on high alert ever since due to a heatwave.
