sierrabermejaA HUGE banner has been unveiled in the fight to get a Costa del Sol mountain officially declared a national park.

Activists and politicians gathered with the banner at the Palacio de Congresos in Estepona to call for the special status for the Sierra Bermeja mountain, which looms above the town.

They want an answer from the Junta de Andalucia on the recent bid to have the zone designated a national park together with the neighbouring Sierra de las Nieves natural park.

Campaigners believe Sierra Bermeja is the more important, but think a joint bid is more likely to lead to success.

If granted, the status would offer more funding to conserve both mountain ranges.

There are currently 15 national parks in Spain, just two of which are in Andalucia.
