GREENPEACE is protesting in Huelva over controversial toxic marshes.

The environmental group has sailed its Arctic Sunrise protest ship to the area, just 500 metres from the city, after four years of inaction.

In 2011, the fertilizer business Fertiberia was court-ordered to stop dumping its toxic and radioactive phosphorus waste into the marshlands next to the Tinto river.

The Environmental Ministry, however, has taken no action as of yet, and is still trying to decide on how to deal with the problem.

Fertiberia’s proposal to bury the waste several centimeters below ground is the least expensive, but Greenpeace as well as the courts has urged the company to take responsibility and clean-up the entire area.
