EXPIRY dates on food could be extended to avoid cash-strapped families throwing it away too early.

Nine million tonnes of food is thrown away in Spain each year – 42% of it by households – despite 300,000 families living with hungry children.

Spanish Agriculture Minister Miguel Arias Canete said packaging and expiry dates will be reviewed in order to address the ‘social and economic’ impact of throwing away food.

Last year European member states were urged to prepare a plan of action to reduce wastage in an attempt to half it by 2025.
