A NEW project will save precious drinking water by using treated sewage water to irrigate golf courses and parks.

The 4.3 million-euro scheme, funded by the Environment Ministry, will incorporate five new pipes plus a pumping station and a tank of 3,000 metres cubed.

Treated water from the Cerros de Aguila sewage plant in Mijas/Fuengirola will be channelled towards Mijas Los Lagos golf course, with a view to using it to water parks and golf courses.

Existing pipes will also be maintained as part of the project.

The aim is to reduce the demand for water from La Concepcion reservoir and other aquifers in the area, which provide drinking water for Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Benahavis, Casares and Manilva.
