PROTECTED: Junta trying to save Imperial Eagle chicks

AFTER the extinction of the Alimoche vulture in Malaga, Andalucia is stepping up efforts to save another endangered species.

The Junta’s environment department has so far rescued 15 chicks born to the Spanish Imperial Eagle this year. All the birds were taken to the San Jeronimo centre, in Sevilla, as part of its protection programme which has saved 96 eagles since it began in 2002.

The chicks, which came from all over Andalucia, were in danger of dying from illness, falling from the nest or being killed by other birds.

The birds each undergo a programme of recuperation before being reintroduced into the wild.
