SPAIN has been left with six million unused swine flu vaccines after the World Health Organisation declared an end to the pandemic.

The government has been criticised after it spent over 100 million euros in a bid to protect up to 40 per cent of the country from the illness.

But in the end less than three million Spaniards chose to be vaccinated against the virus.

General secretary of Health Jose Martinez Olmos confirmed they must destroy all of the left over doses, throwing away 42 million euros in the process.

He said: “We have no alternative because this winter there will be other types of flu that the population needs to be protected against.”

Some countries have lost even more money on wasted vaccines.
