A YOUNG Brown bear has been spotted in the Castilla y Leon region for the first time in more than 100 years.

Following reports that a bee hive had been damaged by a bear in Valderredible, near the Burgos border, experts examined the tracks and found the young bear.

Experts say it is not unusual for bears to move around during this time of year as they can travel long distances in search of food.

The Cantabrian brown bear was declared an endangered species in 1990, but the population in the mountain range is now showing signs of recovery and there has been an increase in the number of bears, especially the young, recorded over the past two years.
